The 5th World Summit on Children & the Media 2007 Media for Children – A Tool for Global Peace took place from 24 to 28 March 2007 in South Africa. The Summit consisted of round tables, workshops, panels, master classes, plenary sessions, exhibitions and an international Children’s summit.

Background In 1999, The World Summit On Media For Children Foundation was established to promote the World Summit movement. The Foundation is a not-for-profit public company incorporated in Victoria, Australia. Its Board of Directors comprises representatives of the principal host organisations of previous and future World Summits and regional summits. The Foundation's objectives are to encourage and promote the World Summit movement, as well as select and assist host organisations for future World Summits.

The World Summit movement was inaugurated with the First World Summit in Australia in 1995, hosted by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation. There have been four World Summits since 1995. The 2nd World Summit on Television for Children took place in London, in 1998. It was hosted by the BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Nickelodeon UK and chaired by Anna Home. It brought together 1,600 representatives from 82 countries to explore the main themes of funding, regulation, co-production and new media.

The 4th World Summit on Media for Children and Adolescents was held in Brazil, in 2004. It focused on media production for television, radio, Internet and electronic games. It was articulate by four themes: One world, many voices; Media Violence; Challenges of quality in media for Children an adolescents; and Commitments for the present and future.
