Brief note on Inequality and Education adjusted Human Development Index - Human Development Report 2010

 

The Human Development Report 2010 includes a relevant innovation on the estimation of the HDI. “To obtain a full picture of the evolution of human development, we must go beyond the dimensions in the HDI. Significant aggregate progress in health, education and income is qualified by high and persistent inequality, unsustainable production patterns and disempowerment of large groups of people around the world.” (HDR 2010).

The report presents on top of the HDI the Inequality-adjusted HDI (IHDI) that “captures the losses in human development due to inequality in health, education and income”.  The report presents the total loss due to multidimensional inequalities and the loss in each of the three dimensions: health, education and income. The inequality-adjusted income shows that people in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Africa and Arab States loss most from inequality in human development. The highest loss in Arab States is because of education- inequality, while in Latin America and the Caribbean was because income-inequality and South Asia because of health-inequality.
