Children's health is closely related to children's rights. It influenced by poverty and deprivation among other underlying determinants of child health and well-being, as well as to the ways in which health policies, programmes and services are delivered to children and communities. The 1989 CRC includes provisions for the legal obligations of governments for the health and well-being of children. The UN Millennium Development Goals and the 2002 UN General Assembly Special Session on Children have also targeted the political commitment of governments to primary education, achieving gender equality, and reducing mortality and HIV infections among children and adolescents. There is a global concensus that equity in children's health could save millions of lives, however local and national policy and programs continue to vary in their effectiveness. |
