Equity for Children E-Newsletter - December 2011

Dear Friends,

Join us this month at www.equityforchildren.org as we highlight a new publication I authored on child poverty in the East Asia Pacific region, published with UNICEF’s East Asia Pacific Regional Office. The report, entitled Child Poverty in East Asia and the Pacific: Deprivations and Disparities shows that, of the 93 million children living in these seven countries, approximately 54% experience poverty as measured by deprivation of basic needs. The seven countries profiled are Cambodia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vanuatu and Viet Nam.

Also featured on the website this month are interviews connected with the research above.  In discussions with me and with UNICEF Social Policy Advisor, East Asia Pacific Regional Office Mahesh Patel, we feature that rapid economic progress and income gains in East Asia and the Pacific have often not translated into gains for all children, even in middle income countries from the report Child Poverty in East Asia and the Pacific: Deprivations and Disparities.

Equity for Children at The New School
and the Department of Childhood Studies at Rutgers University will launch its academic partnership in January 2012. The two bodies will cooperate on academic research and student exchange that raise awareness about child rights and promote equality for children. The partnership will include co-hosting events such as the February 2012 Young Lives Seminar & Presentation and student exchange.

I hope that you continue to find http://www.equityforchildren.org a vital and interesting contribution to your work. Drop us a line to let us know what you think.

Sincerely,

Alberto Minujin, Director
