Gender Equity and Girl Child in India

In 2009, the passing of the Compulsory Education Act was a historic moment for the children of India that indicated the state's commitment to providing educational opportunities for all children. The act reinforced education in schools as being in the best interest of children and society and, in addition, highlighted policies related to child participation, child protection and the challenges of implementing policies in a tradition-bound society. In this paper an attempt is made to analyze the situation. It recommends  that schools continue with what they are doing and also calls for a plan of action in schools that fosters the values of gender equity in the next generation of India.
