Dear Friends,
We are excited that researchers from The Young Lives Project at University of Oxford are coming to New York next week and proud that Equity for Children will host them.  Together with CUNY and Rutgers University, The New School will hold a two-day presentation of The Young Lives Project findings, with opportunities for researchers, practitioners and students to ask questions and discuss the many issues that have arisen as a result of the work.

Young Lives is a longitudinal quantitative and qualitative study of 12,000 children in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam conducted over a period of 15 years, and it is one of the most fascinating I have ever seen.  While longitudinal studies in the developed world have been ongoing for some time, Young Lives is the first study of this scale in the developing world.  The researchers faced unique challenges as they followed a large, mobile population over the 15 years.

More importantly, the results provide evidence that will profoundly affect the way that programs and policies are designed and implemented around the world.  They have the potential to benefit the lives of millions of children.  With this two-day program on February 7-8, Equity for Children is opening a debate that I hope will create new avenues for tackling child poverty and inequity in the 21st century.    read more

Child Poverty in East Asia and the Pacific: Deprivations and Disparities

This study, written by Equity for Children’s Director Alberto Minujin with UNICEF East Asia Pacific, offers the first measurement of multidimensional child poverty at the regional level in East Asia and the Pacific. It is based on data from seven countries in the region: Cambodia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Philippines, Thailand, Vanuatu and Viet Nam. The study results show that, of the 93 million children living in these seven countries, approximately 54% experience poverty as measured by deprivation of basic needs.    read more
