"The child shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of the child's choice." - The Convention on the Rights of the Child, article 13

In summer 2010, 15 students from the New School's Graduate Program in International Affairs traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to work on various media and human rights projects in favela communities around the city. Out of eight projects, four directly targeted children and youth.  Photography, video and sound were used as tools to introduce human rights and child rights themes to the participants. The projects gave the children and youth a new way of voicing their opinion and showing a different image of their lives and their communities than the image often portrayed my mainstream media in Brazil.

Equity for Children is proud to present a special article series on the Brazil IFP Youth Media Projects. All projects will be published on Equity for Children web site with additional information about the project, photos, videos and links to the official project web sites. Please visit the web site to learn more about the Maré Photography Project and the Vila Aliança Sound and Multimedia Project!
