Nov 20th: 20 years of the CRC

November 20th, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child, an international human rights document signed and ratified by UN member countries in 1989. The CRC provides a human rights framework and an outline of basic standards without which children cannot survive and develop in dignity. The rights contained in this document are considered inalienable and universal. The CRC articulates children's rights in a holistic manner and provides a set of guiding principles that fundamentally shapes the way in which we view children. However, two states - the US and Somalia - have yet to ratify the convention.
